e-TRAINING FACILITATOR WORKSHOP MODULE

3½ -hour recorded workshop which takes 8 hours to complete


WHO SHOULD "ATTEND":

This "workshop" is designed for the trainer who will facilitate training programs in an e-learning setting.  

HOW TO "ATTEND":

This course addresses facilitating in synchronous and asynchronous learning situations that are delivered over the World Wide Web.  The course is intended to be taken in modules or units.  An outline for the course follows.  The time identified after each unit title is for the running time for the recorded materials.  Several times during each module you are asked to pause the recorded program to complete an activity or complete an assignment before viewing the next part of the recording.  The actual time to complete a module can vary from 30 to 60 minutes.

There are two types of materials for this course: these written handout materials and the videotaped session that shows the trainers and PowerPoint visuals as you follow the course’s written materials.

There is also a rich resource section that includes a bibliography and web links for further study of this topic.

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN:

By the end of the workshop, the e-facilitator will be able to:

  • Describe the e-trainer’s role as a facilitator of synchronous, asynchronous and blended learning

  • Identify how to use adult learning concepts in an e-learning environment

  • Use options for virtual introductions

  • Use ten facilitation skills in an e-learning environment

  • Promote learner interaction and participation

  • Overcome pitfalls of facilitating e-learning

  • Use four strategies to deal with problem learners

  • Complete planning steps for an e-learning event

  • Identify steps to orient the learner to your technology

WORKSHOP CONTENT:

Unit 1: OVERVIEW (27 minutes)

  • What is e-learning?

  • Characteristics of synchronous, asynchronous and blended learning

  • Methods for the best learning experiences for e-learners

  • Five steps in adult learning

  • Use adult learning concepts in e-learning

  • Assess your skills, manage your expectations

Unit 2: VIRTUAL INTRODUCTIONS AND E-FACILITATOR ROLES (23 minutes)

  • Options for virtual introductions

  • Think like a course designer, facilitating material designed by others

  • E-facilitator roles

  • Ten facilitation skills that translate from the classroom to e-learning

Unit 3: E-FACILITATION SKILLS (35 minutes)

  • How to give directions and set up learning activities

  • How to compensate for lack of face-to-face contact

  • Ten tools and tips to increase interaction and participation

Unit 4: E-FACILITATION QUESTIONS AND PACING (36 minutes)

  • Use questions effectively

  • Are the concepts clear?

  • How can e-learners use what is taught?

  • Keep the pace alive

  • Off-air assignments and other options

Unit 5: E-FACILITATION PITFALLS AND SOLUTIONS (34 minutes)

  • Pitfalls and how to overcome them

  • When to depart from the prepared script

  • Netiquette and problem learner strategies

Unit 6: PREPARE TO FACILITATE AN E-LEARNING EVENT (21 minutes)

  • Target population: who’s out there?

  • Create the event script or road map for the learning event

  • Get materials to the right people

  • How to connect with the virtual learner

Unit 7:  USE THE TECHNOLOGY TO THE BEST ADVANTAGE (20 minutes)

  • Orient the learner to the technology

  • Use tools to promote interaction

  • Knowing system capabilities and limits

  • Who is available to troubleshoot?

  • Technical support for 24/7 learning

  • Evaluate learners and monitor progress

  • Participant feedback: ask the right questions

  • Compiling feedback information and next steps

Unit 8: RESOURCES AND CONCLUSION

  • Answers to activities

  • Lettering and charting suggestions for white boards

  • Glossary of e-learning terms

  • Questions to ask at each of the five adult learning steps
