HOW TO DESIGN AND PRESENT TECHNICAL TRAINING
a two-day workshop with optional third-day participant practice

This two-day workshop is for the subject matter expert or instructor who develops and/or presents training.  The content and methods are appropriate for large group instruction as well as on-the-job training.  Elements of "How to Design Effective Training Programs" and "How to Present Training With Impact!" are combined for the technical environment.

WORKSHOP CONTENT

 Unit 1: Course Overview and Introduction 

 Inventory your current skills
Getting off to a good start - how to begin a technical training session

Unit 2: Helping Adults Learn

How to build retention
Identify three styles of learning
Use 18 adult learning concepts to enhance learning
Evaluate 10 aspects of your instructional style
Teach a 5-minute lesson to a partner

Unit 3: Prepare to Train

Focus on achievable training objectives
Select and sequence appropriate technical training methods
Determine how much time is required to build a skill
Practice a pacing technique to avoid boredom

Unit 4: Facilitation Techniques

Butterflies and how to handle them
Avoid overuse of lectures
Increase participation and “discovery” learning during a lecture
Use basic questions to promote understanding
Paraphrase for better understanding
Discussion techniques to enhance learning
A 4-step method to conduct effective demonstrations
Give effective feedback to learners to motivate and correct
Handle problem learners assertively

Unit 5: Optional Participant Practice Facilitation Sessions

The third day will be devoted to “practice facilitation” sessions presented by each participant.  The participant will conduct a 10 minute session.  A critique sheet that focuses on process, content and delivery will be used for peer and instructor feedback.

 6 easy steps to break down a task into its teachable parts
 Create effective handouts
 Select appropriate visual support

  Prepare an action plan to transfer skills to your job

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

At the end of the training, the employee will be able to:  

1.  Describe a systematic approach to easily help people use new technical tools and processes.
2. Use adult learning techniques to improve retention and reduce learner resistance.
3. Get feedback on 10 key elements of your instructional style.
4. Identify different ways learners prefer to learn and how to adjust the trainer’s teaching style to be successful.
5.  Select the best method to train learners.
6. Pace methods to maintain high energy and active learning by the participants.
7.  Practice making training interesting, not boring.
8.  Select the best method to train employees ‑  depending on the skill level.
9.  Identify how much practice is needed to build a new skill.
10. Use three strategies to handle problem learners.
11.  Practice coaching techniques to help learners become self-directed.
12.  Avoid overuse of lecture and involve participants in their own learning.
