EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION SKILLS
a one-day workshop

Plan and give a more effective presentation.  Two-three practice presentations are done with critique and feedback from peers and the instructor.  Class is limited to 12 participants to due frequent practice presentations. This workshop is designed to help the staff person, manager or executive persuasively present an idea, product or service to the internal or external customer.

 Unit 1: Introductions and Overview of the Workshop

Unit 2: Presentation Basics

Butterflies and what to do
Delivery skills: essentials of speech delivery and mannerisms
Types of presentations: scripted, memorized, extemporaneous, impromptu
Practice one-minute presentation with peer feedback

Unit 3:  Planning the Presentation

Steps to plan an effective presentation
Audience analysis
Benefit or value to audience
Demographic information
Knowledge of subject
Opinion on topic
Advantages/disadvantages for audience
Relationship of speaker to audience
Understanding of vocabulary
Type of acceptable/unacceptable information
Select the topic
Narrow the topic with a specific purpose
From a narrowed topic
From the audience’s point of view, specific, attainable
Your beginning must RIP! (relate, involve the audience, positive impression)
Examples of how to begin are developed
Specific criteria for activities and options to begin a presentation are presented
Participants are asked to work on designing an opening for their presentations
Plan the middle
Summarize the purpose, present your credentials
Summarize the benefit or the last presentation
Identify main points
Present supporting material
Plan how to facilitate and control discussion
Build transitions
Organize the information
Specific criteria for organizing are identified: attention, interest, desire, action
Options for organizing are presented
How to end the presentation – what is the next step?
How to conclude effectively
Examples of endings will be offered
Participants apply ideas to end their presentations
Effective visual support
Create electronic slides with power: use of color, formats and animation
Difficult situation strategies
Practice presentation

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

At the end of the training, the employee will be able to:  

1.  Identify the strengths and weaknesses in their current presentation skills
2. Use strategies to overcome fear of speaking before a group
3. Recognize specific delivery skills and tactics that will enhance their presentations
4. Describe the difference between the topic and the purpose of a presentation and be able to narrow the subject of a presentation to match their audience analysis
5.  Practice using a presentation planning template
6. Prepare to make dynamic presentations
7.  Identify how to capture participant interest from the beginning
8.  List different ways to organize their material
9.  Identify how to end a presentation with impact
10. Strategize approaches and describe actions they would take in dealing with difficult situations
11.  Demonstrate how to use PowerPoint technology effectively
12.  Create a personal action plan for continued self development

Workshop includes:

*       One 1-minute and one 5-10 minute (with video feedback and critique) practice presentation

*       An opportunity to set an individual development plan for review with manager

*       A Presentation Planning Template for future use

*     A variety of learning methods including participative lecture, demonstration, written exercises, case studies, participant practice, and coaching.

Because of the practice by the participants, large groups will be broken into two separate groups of approximately 12, each working with a Training Clinic facilitator.
