EFFECTIVE DELEGATION
a one-day workshop

This workshop helps identify appropriate tasks to be done by others, methods of selecting the right person for the job while remaining in control.  Learn appropriate models to develop others, rather than delegate by dumping undesirable tasks.  Use a support person effectively and make the best use of clerical support personnel.

Unit 1: Overview

What is delegation?
Five levels of delegation and when to use each one
When to delegate to a subordinate
How to make delegation a developmental experience for a subordinate

Unit 2:  How to Delegate

Matching the task and the subordinate
Making the assignment
How to train and develop the subordinate for the delegation
Avoid over-controlling
Delegation pitfalls
How to overcome pitfalls of delegation

Unit 3:  Reporting Back from a Delegation

Which reporting mechanism is appropriate
How often does the subordinate check-in?
Match reporting to authority and responsibility

Unit 4: Evaluate the Delegation 

What were the subordinate’s reactions and the manager’s reactions?
What was learned that provided development?
How can new skills be used in the future?
What results came from the delegation?

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

At the end of the training, the participant will be able to:  

1.  Identify appropriate tasks and assignments to delegate to a subordinate.
2. Identify five levels of delegation and when to use each type of delegation.
3. How to delegate responsibility and accountability.
4. Use appropriate reporting mechanisms to monitor delegated tasks.
